Before the advent of calculators and computers in complex mathematical calculations, the raising of numbers to a certain power or taking a square root required special book-tables, which were called logarithms.

Statistics have shown  that  in  the 18th century,  during  the  time  of  the  smallpox  epidemic,  milkmaids  who  had previously  caught  cowpox  were  less  likely  to  get  smallpox.  As  a  result  of  this  observation,  the  smallpox  vaccine  was created.
